Advocacy Day at the Statehouse - 2006
Legislative Summit
January 31, 2006
Indianapolis, Indiana
The Legislative Summit is an annual Physical Education Promotion Day held at the State Capitol in Indianapolis. The Indiana AHPERD encourages teachers to demonstrate some of the great physical education activities they do at their school on the floor of the State House. Teachers will have an opportunity to meet personally with state legislators and let them know about our passion for daily, quality Physical Education programs. There is no better way to show the importance of our programs to our policy makers in Indianapolis!
The 2005 Legislative Summit was a tremendous success with more volunteers and legislator contacts made than ever before. We will again be conducting fitness and health screenings and will need help with those areas.
Please join us and help generate support for daily, quality Physical Education and Health Education. Become part of the IAHPERD leadership team and be a lobbyist for a day.
Why should I do it?
Decisions that are made by legislators affect our jobs, budgets, and our students. This is our one opportunity to speak directly with the men and women that make those decisions. We need volunteers who are passionate about our work and our students.
What would I need to do?
We will drive down to Indianapolis on Tuesday morning to meet and brief you on the day’s activities. The Advocacy Committee will assign you a specific job taking into consideration your talents and your comfort level with talking to legislators. Responsibilities may include behind the scenes set up and organization, performing health screenings, greeting visitors, and traveling to legislative offices to meet with Senators and State Representatives. We will begin our day around 8:00am. We should finish and break down to leave by 2:00pm.
What will it cost me?
Indiana AHPERD will provide breakfast in the morning. The only thing that you would need to do is to get a substitute for the day.
How will I know what to say to legislators?
We will prepare you with specific information and statistics relating to the importance of daily, quality Physical Education in our schools.
We need to promote our programs and let legislators see that the “new PE” is important in our schools and communities!
